When I first approached the Royal Navy with the idea, it responded with mild amusement. But as time progressed so the challenge was taken more seriously. Eventually, on a blustery August day at the Royal Naval Air Station at Culdrose, Cornwall, I found myself looking out over the seemingly never-ending bonnet of the first production convertible E-type, my navigator and the car’s owner, Peter Neumark, alongside. Ahead lay a 250-mile test, finishing at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, on the eve of the famous Dartmouth Regatta where our Sea King rival, Zulu Alpha 167 from 771 Squadron, was to show the crowds what air sea rescue was all about.
